Sam turned 8 months on October 5th. Shortly after, he officially moved into his own room in his pack'n'play. We moved him over way later than we would have thought, but he was moved into his crib two weeks later. He started riding in shopping carts sitting up. He also started making a crazy face in which he sucks in his top lip. In late September he started sitting skew legged and getting up on all fours. He moved to inch worm crawling just before turning 8 months, and started crawling two days after turning 8 months. A whole new world!

He started saying ba ba in late September. He started being able to self feed himself Cheerios and willingly ate from a spoon (yay!). Lastly, kinda gross, but with all the new foods, he switched to having adult smelling poops early October. Kind of a short update, but we're way behind and he growing so fast! Instead, he are some fun pictures from that month:
Sam turned 7 months on September 5th. During this month, he started officially babbling with baby noises, but also kept the pterodactyl screeches. He tried some more solid food like avocado, steamed carrots, bananas, pasta, and mashed pouches of food combinations. He started holding on when we were holding him. Sam continued to enjoy playing sitting up, often with his boppy behind him. He played with his piano walker and in the exersaucer, as well. He mastered spinning from sitting up to down on his stomach. He found his feet and loves holding and bringing them to his mouth.

He had his first beach day on August 26th. We arrived
midday and while he liked the sand alright, and seemed most indifferent
to the water, he did not care for the surprise of waves. He took a hot
nap under an umbrella and we headed home. His other big trip of the
month was to visit his Great Grandmommy with his cousin Isaac. Sam had
two teeth break through 2 days before turning 7 months. He also started
to army crawl and giggle at the dogs. It's adorable. Lastly, with the
arrival of his teeth, he started playing with his tongue more. It seems
like he will be able to roll his tongue and flip it over.

Sam loves being read to by his daddy, in particular.
And here are a couple outtakes from Kristin's photo session. Sam tends to go after the sticker on the chair, unless of course we try to stop him...
It's been a fun month and he continues to change all the time. He continues to love the dogs and "talk" to them in his high pitch screeches.

At 6 months, Sam had already grown out of nearly all of his 3-6 month clothes. He was wearing mostly 6 month, 6-9 month or even 6-12 month. He was still very smiley and active. One of the funniest things we noticed was the new faces he started making. This is just one of our favorites.

6 months was also a milestone because Sam started sleeping primarily in his Pack'n'Play in preparation for the crib someday. No matter where he sleeps, he still tends to wake up a couple times a night trying to eat. It's a work in progress. K and I also discovered that, like so many kids out there, our boy sometimes likes the box more than whatever toy actually came inside.

Sam started to try out rice cereal and other solid foods like Mum Mum bars this month. It's amazing how much more difficult it can get when he tries to "help," but we're learning.

Our little boy did have a 6 months appointment. We got his measurements again while K showed off her skills keeping a very tired Sam happy. A very short morning nap and shots is a rough combination for a 6 month old it turns out. Not to mention the fact that they didn't have the normal combo shot and Sam was giving an oral vaccine as well as 5 separate shots in his thighs. Here was his 6 month numbers:

Height: 27 inches (67%) Weight: 19 lbs 8.4 oz (85%) Head Circ.: 17.75 inches (93%)

Sam also came to our tournament in Winston Salem. He was very good playing under the tent most of the day. With the help of his trusty Boppy, he was able to sit and play with his toys all by himself for a good while and even took a good nap or two! And of course, we'll leave you with his latest monthly photo:

Apparently blogging isn't your first priority after you become a parent...who knew? This is just a quick recap of the last few months. We'll start with month 5.

So no appointment this month. Sam has started sitting up for short periods of time. We usually use the Boppy to help him out a little. He is still really interested in most dogs and often tries to "communicate" with them. This communication is usually a bunch of really high pitched screeches. He also really enjoys trying to blow raspberries. The only other noticeable change was that he really became aware of faces in June. If anyone picked him up, he would start playing with their mouth or nose. And of course, here is our monthly pic of our little man:

And of course, here are his previous months to compare:
Our little boy is getting so big!

He turned 4 months old last week and we headed back to the doctors office. We got his measurements and then it was time for the dreaded shots. Luckily Sam was only upset for a few minutes afterwards. Having his mom there to pick him up right away certainly helped a bit. These were his measurements:

Height: 25.75 inches (79%) Weight: 16 lbs 15.4 oz (81%) Head Circ.: 17 inches (91%)

Last week, we also got to see our friend Melanie and her daughter Micah. Micah is only 3 weeks older than Sam, and it was obvious they hit it off right away!

As of right now, Sam absolutely loves to smile. He is an extremely happy baby first thing in the morning. He still wears size 2 diapers, is already wearing 6 month clothes, and has already grown out of size 2 shoes! He started blowing raspberries this last week and it's really adorable since he hasn't mastered it yet. It's mostly just blowing lots of small bubbles while making an "ooooo" noise. Sam's eyes are still mostly blue, and he's getting a little more hair on the sides of his head now. He's definitely getting stronger and tries to exert his own little will when we hold him. Sam still likes to nap in his swing during the days, and sleeps in his rocker at night, only waking up one time somewhere between 2-5am. He's definitely starting to notice the dogs and seems to recognize people he spends alot of time with, namely his grandparents (especially Mimi). Last week, Sam also finally had the opportunity to meet his great-grandparents on Joey's side! We also went to family dinner last Thursday where he met Kristin's cousin Ted and was able to hang out with her Grandmommy again. For those keeping track, we'll leave you with his 4 month picture(s):

Our little Samuel turned 3 months on Sunday, and is 13 weeks old today!

He's moving from 3 month size clothes to 3-6 month, and is finishing up his size 1 diapers to move into size 2. He averages 6 diapers a day. At his 2 month appointment he weighed 13lbs 13oz (84%), was 23.25 inches long (62%), and his head circumference was 15.8 in (81%). We estimate that he's getting close to 16 lbs at this point.

Last Monday April 28 at my (Kristin) Bible Study he rolled on the floor from his stomach to his back during tummy time. He has done it a few more times since then. His cradle cap has greatly improved (with anti-dandruff shampoo and using a comb. The first time I used the comb, it was really scary! It felt like I was scalping him). He continues to lose some of his hair, mostly in the sides of his head. For a while his top hair would stand up and give him a little baby-hawk. It also looks a little lighter in color. He'll occasionally reach up and grab his own hair. While I hold him, he likes to hold on to my hair for support, although he doesn't really pull it. Sam likes to be held a lot, but will play in his playgym, swing, bouncer, and bumbo. He makes more ooo noises, and more recently while he's nursing, which is kinda funny. He still likes to be bounced or be moving a lot. He enjoys standing all wombly like on legs. He kicks more than he grabs, but he's starting to hold onto a few toys. We can tell he continues to grow, get a little stronger, and smile and watch people a little more. His cousin #2, Isaac, was born yesterday :). We can't wait to get the 3 amigos together!

So it's been a busy couple of months since Samuel entered our lives. Luckily, I was able to get time off for a majority of the first few weeks, but it has certainly been an adjustment. At first, Sam was waking up every 2-3 hours. He slept for a couple 4 hour spans by the end of the first month. Since then, he's actually slept for 6 hours a couple times. Kristin generally wakes up to feed him at least once, if not twice a night. We had so many friends and family come to visit us during those first few weeks. Several of them brought really good food with them, as well.
Sam really likes to sleep in Kristin's arms. He's spent a few whole nights in his rocker, but has spent several more sleeping safely held by his mom. We've had a few days of seemingly non-stop crying, but one of those also lead to his best night of sleep yet at the time so we try to find the silver lining. Most of the clothes he's been wearing recently were so generously lent to us by our friends the Snokes and Defishers. It's such a blessing to have friends willing to help us out and provide clothes and good advice.
A few weekends ago, we got to take Sam to his first wedding. His Uncle Mike married Kirksey Ervin in Morganton, NC and the wedding was so much fun. Sam only fussed once during the ceremony, but Kristin moved so fast when he started that hardly anyone noticed. A quick change later and we were all back in time to watch the new bride and groom make their way down the aisle. It was so great to see so much family during the occasion.
This week, we got a big surprise. Sam's cousin Ian was born on March 25th at the same hospital where we had been just last month. Even though Sam was only a little heavier when he was born, Ian just seemed so small! It really made it easy to see how much our little boy had grown in the past 7 weeks. Anyways, that's all for now, but I'll add a few more pictures. Oh yeah, did I mention he's finally starting to smile! Kristin says it's just a "social smile," and he doesn't actually think I'm funny, but I don't know... :)
The first couple nights after we got home from the hospital were pretty rough, sure. But they still had their fun moments and K and I feel like we've started to get a better grasp on this. The most important thing seems to be having a positive attitude and we're doing our absolute best to keep that in mind. That brings me to our adventure this morning...

Sam started crying and we knew he had eaten not too long ago. So it was only natural we checked his diaper next and K found a fairly wet one. We went about changing him and getting the Vaseline on per doctors orders, when Sam decided to change things up a bit. Next thing we knew we had a nearly two foot geyser that was putting some of the artwork in the room in danger. Kristin was so shocked, she stepped back and started laughing. I did my best to block the picture, but he was pretty much done by the time I really moved. Sam wasn't done yet, though. As soon as the pee started to slow down, he began pooping onto his shirt and blanket since we hadn't gotten the clean diaper in place yet. Whew. K and I finally stopped laughing long enough to get him clean and all the dirty stuff to the laundry room shortly after. I think this was Sam's way of initiating us into parenthood. This little guy is gonna make life interesting...
We hadn't called anyone except K's parents so they could take care of our dogs in the meantime. No need to get people excited if it wasn't the real thing after all. We were admitted and waiting in triage by 9:00. K was now 3cm and the doctor wanted us to walk around for a bit to see if we could keep the labor progressing. By now, we knew it was the real thing!

We walked from 9:45 until close to 10:30 and K was getting more and more uncomfortable. Dr. G checked her again and after finding her at 5cm, we were sent to our very own delivery room by 11. By midnight, K was already getting an epidural and relief finally started to come. We managed to get a little sleep in the next few hours. I tried to act tough like I wasn't tired, but I hear I slept way harder than Kristin (yes, my wife who had an epidural haha). The doctor broke her water around 2am and everything continued progressing just as quickly after that. By 4:30, the nurse informed Kristin that she was at 10cm and nearly ready to push. She started pushing at 4:50, Dr. Gausmann was called shortly after, and our little guy Sam made his entrance at 5:22am.

For some quick stats, Samuel Rhys Connelly was 8lb 7oz at birth and 21 inches long. He was born with a full head of hair and a healthy set of lungs. We know that the rest of our lives are forever changed, but we are so so thankful and blessed to have a healthy baby boy to take home.

Sam had visitors galore the first day, but we never felt overwhelmed. To be honest, everything was still kind of surreal. We also had so many wonderful family and friends that offered to bring snacks and food anyways. The first few nights in the hospital were a little rough, but we did take advantage of the opportunity when the nurses offered to take him to the nursery for a few hours both nights. The real adventure was still yet to begin though!

Obviously I haven't been great at updating so we're going to go for a quick, one-post update here.

Back on Memorial Day weekend last year, Kristin and I got quite a good surprise. We had just recently visited my parents and, on a whim, decided to pick up a crib while we were in Ikea. God obviously had a plan for us because, only a few days later, we found out that Kristin was pregnant. We took tons of pictures of Kristin's bump (our future Sam) along the way and Kristin kept track of all of this on her blog Little Baby C!

At the end of September we also found out that Kristin's sister and sister-in-law were also expecting in 2013. It was a wild last quarter of the year, but that's a story for another time. For today we'll start on Kristin's due date, January 30, 2013. We already knew she was at 2cm and our little guy was only days away. However, on that Wednesday, the doctor told us that it was not likely going to be soon. We scheduled another appointment for Friday (one last check before the weekend), but we were both honestly hoping that Sam would be early rather than late. After Kristin asked a couple questions Thursday afternoon, an impromptu appointment had to happen that day. Once again, though, we were told to get comfortable because Sam didn't appear to be ready just yet.

Despite tons of walking, plenty of spicy food, and even a full moon, Monday morning arrived with no Sam and we headed to the doctor office for Kristin's next appointment. She was checked again, told Sam was in for the long haul, and also informed she might start feeling some cramps for a little bit due to being checked. About an hour later, the cramps started as predicted and Kristin thought nothing of it. I (J) had to head to work for a meeting at 4 and made Kristin promise me she was OK before I took off. Apparently the "cramps" had never stopped and even kicked up a notch around 5pm, though. By the time I got back around 6:30, Kristin was starting to get really uncomfortable. My stomach had been a little out of whack for the last day or so. Kristin tried to downplay her pain for a bit to take care of me, but she had already started tracking how far apart they were just in case. They probably averaged about 3:30-4 minutes apart and about 35-45 seconds apiece. We called the doctor to ask a few questions around 8 and Dr. Gausmann did confirm that Kristin just might be in labor. She said the triage center at Rex hospital was packed so try to hold out as long as possible, but we were in the car with the bags packed within 30 minutes. We're getting pretty close to present day, but I think I'll end it here for this post. We'll pick up next time when we arrived at the hospital on Monday night!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3756287454466219595.post-81830833803921412892012-08-31T16:07:00.000-04:002012-08-31T16:07:23.715-04:00Dash(er) Connelly!Wow, it's easy to lose track of time with everything we have going on these days. Now to pick up where I left off. After getting back from the honeymoon, Kristin and I went about slowly getting rid of or repainting or moving around all my old stuff in order to make the house our own. In the middle of all that, we decided that Sully needed a little brother. After doing some research and contacting Recia from Recia's Prize Labradoodles, we were sent pictures of several adorable puppies. We just happened to fall in love with one of them in particular:

I had no idea what I was in for. Kristin had done a great job with Sully already in just the few months she had him before we started dating so alot of the puppy behavior was already dealt with. But, with her reassuring me all the way, we headed out on October 18th, 2011 to pick up the newest member of the family, Dash Connelly (we decided it was short for Dasher haha). This is a picture of Dash on the car ride home with us that first day. He was cuddly though obviously a little scared too.
You can see why we knew this guy was the one for us. He was so cute back then with his little white markings and strikingly green eyes. I've never seen those on a dog before! We got him home and the first thing we set about doing was letting Sully and Dash get to know each other. Dash was extremely excited to meet Sully and, at least in his mind, they instantly became fast friends. Sully took a little longer to warm up to that idea. There was a lot of ignoring and little snips at the little guy before he just gave in and started to play along. I was off work for a couple days and getting ready to start working nights again so it was my job to watch the little guy and hopefully distract him enough so my lovely wife could get some rest. It was alot of fun, with a few moments of frustration mixed in. Like I said earlier, I had no idea what I was in for. If he wasn't peeing on the floor or whining, he was finding the nearest electrical cord to try to pull on. It was interesting to say the least.

It wasn't too much longer before our two boys started getting along and playing, though. We kept Dash in his crate at night, which caused a fair bit of whining for a few weeks, and Sully stayed in his bed nearby (until he jumped on the bed late at night knowing we wouldn't notice :) ). Here are some of the early photos we got of the two of them:

Sully didn't like that all of the toys ended up in Dash's little den, but he never got too upset when Dash stole them from him.

Both boys absolutely loved the chance to sleep on either the couch or our bad as long as they could near Kristin or I. At this point, Dash was still a long way from the jumper he is now.

I think Sully may have bet him he couldn't get under the couch. Dash won, but some crying soon told me that it wasn't quite as easy to get out as it was to get under there.

Kristin and I decided it would be fun to see how they liked the coats that my parents' dogs wore while we were visiting around Christmas.

Here are our boys a few month later after their first haircuts together. Sully got the actual cut we wanted, though they left the ears a little longer than we would have liked. Dash, however, apparently needed to be warmed up to the idea so they only gave him a "puppy cut," which seems to mean trim the paws up and a little bit of the face and don't touch another hair on his body. He looked a little ridiculous haha.

Since then, our boys have continued to teach us what it means to be responsible and how it's possible to care for someone so much even when they make life a little difficult. We've gone through our fair share of Resolve and a few destroyed slippers (mostly Dash), but we wouldn't trade any of that for the joy they also bring. Hopefully this has started to prepare us for another future member of our family, but that's something for an entirely different post!

For several months we were planning on going to San Francisco for our honeymoon. Kristin had joked about Disney World early on, but we only had the west coast on our minds really. After searching for several weeks and receiving some help from some very gracious family members, we realized that Orlando was the way to go. I think we can both say now that it was the perfect choice for us! Here are a few pictures we snapped along the way:

Honeydukes and the train to Hogwarts! We couldn't very well go to

After looking at several churches around the Raleigh area, Kristin and I finally settled on Fairmont United Methodist Church. It was still decorated for Christmas which made the decision all too easy for my bride-to-be.

The next step, of course, was to find the perfect place for the reception. We looked at several options, but it wasn't until we met Sarah Morris at The Stockroom at 230 that we knew the search was over.

The morning of, several family members and friends headed down to the Stockroom and started decorating. It truly made the place feel magical by the time we got there after the ceremony.
Mike Williams agreed to perform the wedding for us even though he had recently moved to Burlington. Mike had officiated both Brian and Jenn's weddings so that made it even more special that he was willing to do that.
The whole day seemed to fly by, but everything was perfect. We were so glad to share our day with all our friends and families. God has truly blessed us with amazing people in our lives, who I'm sure will help us to always put Christ first as we try to help each other along the way. In case you were wondering, On A Night Like This is the name of the song that was playing when I proposed to Kristin. The singer, Dave Barnes, also sang the song we used for our first dance, Nothing Fancy.

Kristin and her family celebrated in the morning and then hopped in a car and headed to Danville, VA to visit her grandmother. We had talked about the possibility of her heading back early to spend the evening with me, but I was still very excited to find out it was actually happening.

I later found out that she already knew I had bought a ring...apparently my "hiding place" was not very good. My original plan was to wait until closer to New Years and maybe decorate the back porch with lights. I wanted to make everything magical, but it turns out I couldn't wait and I knew Christmas is definitely her favorite holiday so...
See, the Lowthers have a tradition (with German roots I believe) where all the kids race to find a certain ornament on the tree. I've tried it once, and believe me, it's harder than it sounds. Well, I hid a small plastic ring on our little tree (think Charlie Brown size) and told Kristin we were going to play our own version. She finally found the ring and by the time she started turning around to ask me what it meant, I was grabbing the real ring and getting down on one knee. The picture above is Kristin's actual engagement ring while we tried to recreate the scene during our engagement shoot.
The two of us had known for some time that we wanted to get married one day, but Kristin had always joked that she would say maybe or something like that when I "finally" asked her. She forgot. I think she was trying to say yes before I finished my spiel. Still, up to that point, it was the best day of my life and I can't blame her for getting caught up in the moment.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3756287454466219595.post-66728620593350446332012-07-16T23:25:00.000-04:002012-07-16T23:25:50.110-04:00First DateAs Kristin always puts it, we were both very aware of the other, even though we didn't really run in the same circles. I played ultimate frisbee with her brother, Brian, which is how we initially met.

Fast forward a few years and we get to January 23rd, 2010. Kristin and I had been talking for months and kept mentioning getting together sometime to hang out, but something always popped up. She'll tell you she did the asking, and she's technically right, but what she tends to leave out is that I took the day off from work when she told me Saturday afternoon would be good for her too!

We met at Starbucks in Cary Crossroads since she was going to be at Kara Snoke's baby shower earlier that afternoon anyways. I was incredibly nervous when I walked in, but K promises she didn't notice. When we got to the register, I offered to pay like the gentleman I am, but then promptly lost control of the card I was getting out of my wallet and threw it in the air. I tried to grab it several times, only managing to knock it into the air again each time. When it finally hit the floor, I quickly picked it up and paid, and we made our way to a couple of seats. I don't think I looked up for a good 45 minutes at least.

Nevertheless, we talked for close to 4 hours and I could have stayed all night. In fact, Kristin asked if I was hungry, and I took what I thought was the bait and said "Yeah, actually I am. We could go over to Noodles & Company and grab something to eat, if you want?" When she responded, "No, I'm not really hungry," you can imagine I was caught off guard. But a quick "Yeah, me either" from me saved the day, and we talked for another hour anyways. All in all, it was a great time and a great memory!
In case you don't already know, JK stands for Joey & Kristin. With 2 crazy dogs already and our first kid on the way, I finally decided to give in to this blogging craze in order to document it all. This blog may well serve as a source of our life updates for friends and family, or it might just be a fun way to store all of our memories and funny stories along the way.
The beautiful woman in the picture above is my wife, Kristin. You might think she's posing for the picture with our mini labradoodle, Sully, but they actually just hang out like that pretty much all the time. We also have a chocolate one named Dash that we got back in October. I still find it hard to believe that he's already bigger than Sully (who is almost exactly 2 years older). Anyways, I'm going to attempt to update this as often as possible, but in order to do that, I feel like we need to start at the beginning...Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
